Alpaca Fibers | Alpacas of Indian Point Hills

Alpacas produce one of the world’s finest and most luxurious natural fibers.  In ancient times the fiber was reserved for Incan royalty and referred to as The Fiber of Kings.  Soft as cashmere and warmer, lighter, and stronger than wool, it comes in more natural colors than any other fiber producing animal with 22 basic colors with various blends.  Now this cashmere-like fiber is enjoyed by fiber artists and fashion houses around the world.

The alpacas are shorn once a year, usually in spring without causing injury to the animals.  It would actually be inhumane to leave them in full fleece year round.  The fiber can then be processed in a number of ways.  Alpaca owners can send the fiber to commercial or cottage mills to be spun.  Many choose to spin it themselves.  The yarn can then be used for knitting, crocheting, or weaving.  Raw fleece can be wet or needle felted.

There also fiber co-ops in North America which accept fiber from breeders giving another outlet for fiber processing while working to increase the awareness of and demand for alpaca fiber.  The possibilities with alpaca fiber are endless.  It creates some of the most beautiful garments and the industry is growing in leap and bounds.
